Borussia Dortmund host VfL Bochum in this season’s Revierderby. After Schalke’s relegation, the other club from the district Bochum joined the Bundesliga. And, as the Royal Blues fight for a quick return to first-tier football, Bochum can secure their status for next season with a win at Signal Iduna Park.
Dortmund witnessed Bayern’s celebration party
For the very first time, Bayern secured a championship by beating Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker. Although that term is a recent phenomenon, Dortmund remained the closest to fighting Bayern for the title.
Their latest transfer movements suggest they could be ready to take it to another notch next season. But, then again, it always looks promising before the new season starts on the wrong foot for Dortmund.
For now, it all ends in agony for Dortmund’s faithful. They were toothless and unmotivated for the large part at the Allianz Arena despite there also being another shambolic refereeing in the biggest game of German football.
When and where to watch?
The match kicks off at 14:30 on Saturday 30th April 2022, and the entire match will be available on Sky Sports.
Bochum closer to safety
Although the last few games have gone wrong for Thomas Reis and his team, Bochum are very close to achieving survival in the Bundesliga. All they need is one win out of the remaining three games to retain their league status.
After a solid point away at Champions League caliber Bayer Leverkusen, Bochum lost their last two games to Freiburg and Augsburg. Yet Arminia Bielefeld and Stuttgart dropped further points that Bochum is still clear of any danger.
Reis was suspended last week after becoming the first Bundesliga coach to see a straight red card. It was all a misunderstanding as Reis’ frustration was supposed to be at Konstantinos Stafylidis, who picked up a red card when Freiburg were 3-0 ahead in the game.
The derby ended all square last December
Julian Brandt saved Dortmund’s blushes following Erling Haaland’s superb assist to salvage a draw in the derby. Bochum led for the most part thanks to a successful spot-kick from Sebastian Polter.
Borussia Dortmund & VfL Bochum Team News
Dortmund are expected to experiment with the lineup as they already lost the title and confirmed a Champions League berth. They were missing 11 players away at Bayern last weekend.
Bochum will be without two left fullbacks in the influential Danilo Soares (injury) and Stafylidis (suspension).
Dortmund presented with the chance of trying the youth
Dortmund’s youth setup hasn’t been productive of late, but there is enough evidence of talent with Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, Lion Semic and Tom Rothe stepping up to the first team in recent weeks. Marco Rose had a chance to evaluate his squad in midweek as Dortmund played a charity game against Dynamo Kyiv. Bochum can secure their next season Bundesliga status this weekend even if they lose the game at Signal Iduna Park.
