Betting Preview: Freiburg v Monchengladbach

After clinching their first-ever DFB Pokal final on Tuesday, Freiburg host Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday. Adi Hutter’s side continued their poor season with a second derby defeat last week against Koln. Meanwhile, the Breisgau Brazilians booked their place for the Olympiastadion next month.

Streich’s best season

Christian Streich is reaching new heights in his tenth season at the helm of SC Freiburg. They’re only a point off from a Champions League spot. And, in the cup, he guided them to a first final.

It was a tricky tie they had to get over the line at second-tier Hamburg. After beating 4-1 Hoffenheim away from home, they snatched another huge victory, but it was far from straightforward.

Hamburg had their chances and played a good game, but Freiburg capitalized on their three unforced errors in the first-half. It was another historic win as Freiburg keep dreaming of a Champions League appearance and a first title.

When and where to watch?

The match kicks off at 19:45 on Saturday 23rd April 2022

Hutter’s Gladbach is having a forgettable season

After four unbeaten games, Gladbach suffered their 13th Bundesliga defeat last weekend. And it’s one of the painful losses as the much-improved FC Koln did the double over them under Steffan Baumgart.

Dejan Ljubicic netted in both encounters in his first season at Koln. Monchengladbach lost all four games in the Rhein derbies against Bayer Leverkusen and FC Koln this season.

Even if they win all the remaining four games, their point tally would only be 49. Freiburg already collected more points than that as Gladbach will most likely have another season without European participation.

Historic game in the first meeting

Freiburg became the first team to score six games away from home in the first meeting between the sides. Nico Schlotterbeck’s goal in the 37th minute was Freiburg’s six on the night that will be remembered long in the memory of Bundesliga history. Although Vincenzo Grifo only had two assists to his name, most of the goals arrived from the Italian’s set-piece deliveries.

Freiburg & Gladbach Team News

Yannik Keitel and Kevin Schade will be the two players absent from Freiburg’s matchday squad. Streich will not have the luxury of giving their players a rest after a historic midweek like Oliver Glasner as they fight for a top-four finish.

Marvin Friedrich is currently unavailable because of a positive COVID-19 test.

Freiburg can end the week in fourth

Leipzig will host Union Berlin at the same time Freiburg play against Gladbach. A Leipzig win could also help them to finish in fifth place for a guaranteed Europa League spot even if they lost the Pokal final. As for Gladbach, there is little to play for until the end of the season, but they seem to be convinced of Hutter to change the story in the next campaign.
