Betting Preview: Koln v Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund continue their unlikely title charge in Koln as they face Steffan Baumgart’s side following a midweek win at Mainz. Marco Rose’s side now closed the gap to Bayern to four points. Koln currently sits in a position that could see them qualify to next season’s European Conference League.

Derby delight for Koln

Baumgart managed to convert the fortune of Koln in his short time at the club. The club who was only saved by a playoff win against Holstein Kiel is now dreaming of a return to the European stage under their charismatic coach.

And one of their identities has been sheer energy and passion that can be spread through their full-throttle coach Baumgart. They showed this in their derby fixtures so far this season.

Koln beat both Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen despite having an inferior quality and squad depth to their two neighbors. Kingsley Schindler netted his very first Bundesliga game as they came away from BayArena with all three points last week.

When and where to watch?

The match kicks off at 18:30 on Sunday 20th March 2022, and the entire match will be available on Sky Sports.

Dortmund’s defensive numbers improved with makeshift defense

Makeshift could mean clean sheets in Dortmund. The Black and Yellows kept four clean sheets in their last five Bundesliga games. Although the only goal they conceded felt like the end of the title charge at Augsburg, Dortmund collected five more points than Bayern in their current run.

Their last two games haven’t been impressive at all. After throwing away two precious points against Augsburg, Dortmund beat Arimina Bielefeld and Mainz with two 1-0 victories on the trot.

Their midweek rescheduled fixture at Mainz was the most difficult one as Dortmund had very little going on their way until the makeshift captain Axel Witsel netted the winner with his first goal in over a year.

Tigges’ first goal in the reverse fixture

Koln collected four points in the head-to-head games last season including a win in Signal Iduna Park. But Dortmund won their first meeting of the season with the Billy Goats through goals from Thorgan Hazard and Steffan Tigges, who netted his first Bundesliga goal with a header on the night.

FC Koln & Borussia Dortmund Team News

Florian Kainz and Jonas Hector are out as they both tested positive for COVID-19.

Mahmoud Dahoud picked his fifth yellow card of the season against Mainz so he’ll be suspended for this one. Marco Reus and Raphael Guerreiro could return to the squad after their absence in recent weeks. Meanwhile, Thomas Meunier, Mateu Morey, Youssoufa Moukoko and Tigges are all out until the end of the season.

Another tricky test for Dortmund

Rose’s side can’t afford to drop another point as they hope to face Bayern in Allianz Arena with this point deficit. Koln could pose a serious challenge for their title aspiration both in terms of their recent good records against Dortmund and the massive improvement of the club under Baumgart.
