After being knocked out of Europe, Lazio and Napoli face in one of the most-anticipated Serie A games of the weekend. Both sides failed to progress to the Round of 16 in the Europa League on Thursday.
Lazio and Porto’s clash had plenty of twists
It wasn’t over until the final whistle. Although Porto entered the injury-time of the second leg leading by two goals, it was back to a tense ending in the final moments of the titanic clash between the two sides.
Porto were outplayed for the majority of the first half. Ciro Immobile, who is back to Lazio’s side, had put the ball to the net on three occasions, but only one of them counted after VAR intervention.
Porto once again came from behind to lead the game 2-1 before Lazio breathed life with Danilo Cataldi scoring five minutes to injury-time. But Lazio failed to add to their tally as Porto booked their place in the next round with an aggregate scoreline of 4-3.
When and where to watch?
The match kicks off at 19:45 on Sunday 27th February 2022, and the entire match will be available on BT Sport.
Napoli stunned by rampant Barcelona
When the draw was made back in December, Napoli were the overwhelming favorites to knock out Barcelona from the Europa League. The Serie A side was battling for a league title while Barcelona experienced one of their worst seasons in recent memory.
But things quickly changed in both camps. The continuing injuries to star players at Napoli caused them to struggle for consistency, although the Scudetto dream is still alive with both Milan sides yet to distance themselves from Napoli.
And Barcelona is flying high under a former star, Xavi. Their winter signings also made an instant impact with Ferran Torres, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and Adama Traore all involved in a goal or assist in an aggregate 5-3 win for Barcelona.
Napoli rampant in the reverse fixture
It was Napoli’s best half of football this season when the two sides met earlier this season. Three first-half goals from distance helped Napoli to all but secure three points before the half-hour mark. Fabien Ruiz also scored a stunner after the break in the night Dries Mertens netted a brace.
Lazio & Napoli Team News
Patryk Dziczek and Manuel Lazzari would be absent from Lazio’s squad to face Napoli.
Luciano Spalletti will have to plan without Kevin Malcuit, Axel Tuanzebe, Stanislav Lobotka, Andre Zambo Anguissa and Hirving Lozano.
Two teams in search of Europe
The top four competition is getting bigger by every season in Italy. Atalanta looked to miss out on the Champions League for the first time after three successive appearances as Juventus now moved to fourth. Napoli is currently in the title race, but the main goal would remain to secure a Champions League berth they missed out to Juventus on the final day last season. As for Lazio, they were back to Champions League last term; a repeat of that feat looked far-fetched for now.
