RC Lens and Olympique Lyonnais met in the first Saturday Ligue 1 game of the weekend. Lens returned to winning ways after successive defeats with a stunning performance in the first 30 minutes against Girondins de Bordeaux. Lyon also quickly forgot their fall in Monaco with a deserving 2-0 victory over OGC Nice.
Fofana masterminded another Lens victory
In the same way as they outclassed Troyes in the first half last year, Lens were all over Bordeaux in the first half-hour. They created a plethora of chances and could’ve easily gone more than 3-0 ahead.
In the end, it was not an easy victory with Bordeaux showing spirit to close the gap to just one goal. But the result meant Lens now ended their mini-crisis in the new year after the first half of the season they flirted with Champions League football.
The team’s two creative players, Seko Fofana and Gael Kakuta, both scored a goal on the night. The youngster Arnaud Kalimuendo also continued his excellent season with the opening goal.
When and where to watch?
The match kicks off at 16:00 on Saturday 19th February 2022, and the entire match will be available on BT Sport.
Lyon see good signs from new signings
Lyon reacted quickly in the winter transfer with two marquee signings in the final few days of the market. While Tanguy Ndombele arrived to replace Bruno Guimares, they thought ahead with Romain Faivre arriving early with Xherdan Shaquiri left for MLS after the incoming transfers for French clubs ended.
Ndombele is showing a kind of form that made Jean-Michel Aulas entertain the idea of exercising their option of making the move permanent despite Tottenham Hotspur’s exaggerated price.
Faivre is yet to score or assist, but the early signs are positive for a player who had a good spell at Brest to be linked with lots of European clubs including AC Milan and Borussia Monchengladbach.
2-1 Lyon win in the first meeting
It wasn’t pretty at the end, but Lyon secured the win when they were under massive pressure from an excellent Lens side earlier this season. With the game coming right after they lost to Nice with three goals in the final ten minutes, Lyon was so near to dropping another valuable point. If we consider the table until the 75th minute, Lyon would’ve been top of the table in Ligue 1.
RC Lens & Olympique Lyonnais Team News
Lens could continue to be without key players Jonathan Gradit and Wesley Said on either side of the pitch.
Rayan Cherki will be out for months from Lyon’s squad after he was injured in the final moments in the defeat in Monaco.
Europe is the target
With only a point between the two clubs, it’s a direct toss for European football. Champions League could be a big ask for both teams, but they will cast their eye in the Europa League places. For Aulas, the main target is the Champions League as he also entertained the subject of winning this season’s Europa League, which would be a backdoor to enter next season’s Champions League. Lens only gets promoted 18 months ago so everything is a bonus for them at this stage of the season.ho played Champions League football this season, has to be content with the top half of the standing finish.
