Sweden and the Czech Republic face each other in what could be a very competitive outing between two teams in pretty much equal standards. Both went too far in the Euro 2020, and they now hope to qualify for another tournament in the 2022 World Cup.
Sweden missed a chance to triumph Spain
Sweden had a very good start to their World Cup qualifying campaign. Including a 2-1 win against former World champions Spain, they started their run with three straight victories.
But a defeat against Greece slumped them back as Spain finally managed to achieve an automatic qualification. Sweden lost to lowly Georgia and Spain in their final two matches of the group stage.
Yet Sweden had a good Euros that can boost their confidence ahead of the final rounds of the World Cup qualifiers. They challenged Spain and only lost in the extra time against a highly-contested game against Ukraine in the Round of 16.
When and where to watch?
The match kicks off at 19:45 on Thursday 24th March 2022, and the entire match will be available on Sky Sports.
Czech booked their place through the Nations League
In a group Belgium racked up 20 points out of 24, Wales and the Czech Republic fight for their right to an automatic qualification to the playoff round of this month’s World Cup qualification.
But both teams finally made it to the playoffs as Czech progressed via their good record in the Nations League. Although Wales didn’t need to pick that card as they finish second, they could’ve been the second team with Austria to progress via that route if the Czech qualified directly.
The Czech Republic surprised many in their Euro 2020 campaign last summer. Patrick Schick scored one of the best goals of the tournament, and the Czech reached the quarter-finals stage.
Sweden is unbeaten against the Czech
It’s only three games and they only have one win to their name, but Sweden is yet to lose against the Czech Republic. This is the first time the two sides met in a competitive fixture.
Sweden & Czech Republic Team News
Manchester United’s new star Anthony Elanga called up to the Sweden national team for the first time. Greuther Furth’s Branimir Hrgota also returned to the side while Zlatan Ibrahimovic is included despite his struggle for fitness in club football.
Star striker Patrik Schick will be missing from the Czech squad due to injury. Goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka is also unavailable as they picked two new players in their absences.
The Czech travelled late to Sweden
Due to technical issues, the Czech Republic delegate had to postpone their arrival to Sweden for the game for Wednesday. Sweden gets the advantage of playing the crucial tie at their home ground. The winner of the fixture will play against Poland for a ticket to Qatar’s World Cup.
